Downspout Diverters

downspout diverters

To enable your home’s gutter system to operate properly it needs regular maintenance. If you are thinking of putting your home up for sale, one piece of help and advice given by realtors is that you must ensure the good condition of your downspout diverters, which should not have any bent parts. Certain things make a residence more saleable, and clean and well looked-after gutters is one of them. Clearing your gutters twice yearly is the advice advocated by most experts in home improvement. The rain water is not going to run off thoroughly if your gutters have been clogged with leaves, twigs and other debris. The purpose of downspout diverters is to lead rainwater away efficiently and protect your home’s foundation, so if the water is actually flowing over the sides of the gutters this is not happening. This may even cause damage to the foundation of your home. The two times a year that you should clean your gutters is considered to be in the Fall, after the leaves have fallen, and in the Springtime. When you are cleaning the gutters is an excellent time to look for damage, such as loose nails and rusty places or holes. If any nails have worked loose, the gutter will not be securely affixed and will cause more problems later. After the debris has been taken away from the gutters, any that are remaining, needs to be rinsed down the gutters with your garden hose, and down the downspout diverters. This tends to also allow you to check that the downspout diverters is devoid of any debris. A downspout is simple and easy to lift off and clean if you see that water is not flowing easily down it. Water must be diverted away from where it issues from the downspout, and concrete or plastic diverters are available for this. This can reduce soil erosion below the downspout exit. You will no longer need to clean your gutters when you have gutter guards installed, because they keep the debris out, but a twice a year inspection is still needed. Getting specialists to install your gutter guards will cost a packet, but thankfully it is something you can do by yourself with little difficulty, along with saving yourself a few thousand dollars. Because of the expense, a lot of people don’t believe gutter guards are worth the money. Big leaves along with other debris can be prevented from entering the gutter by installing gutter guards, but that doesn’t mean that they will keep out smaller debris. Evergreen needles, seeds, tiny parts of twigs and bark, and buds, all will continue to make it into the gutters. With time, when the basic matter of all these kinds breaks down, they form debris that collects in the gutters. It can also be built up over the top of the screening of the gutter guard, and it will need to be cleaned off, by hand. These are the logic behind why many people view downspout diverters as being more problematic than useful.
